Climate change and trade: Perspectives from Australia and Indonesia
Frank Jotzo and Budy Resosudarmo argue that “changes in trade flows are closely interconnected with changes in domestic economic structure. Changes in domestic production and consumption affect trade, but changing trade opportunities also affect driving change in domestic economic activity.” For Indonesia and Australia Jotzo and Resosudarmo examine the interaction of climate change impacts on commodity supply, greenhouse gas emission mitigation pricing and regulation policies, policies for and investment in new and clean technologies, and issues of carbon finance and emissions trading. Somewhere Over the Rainbow: The Australian Defence White Paper, economic vulnerability, and China
Richard Leaver and Alex Stephens write that the Australian government "looks to trade with ... China to ignite the domestic growth that will produce the revenue streams to pay for this capital spending in Defence." Beijing, they conclude, "has been given a very loud speaking part in this Australian defence debate. Chinese authorities will therefore have, if they so choose, a string of opportunities to make Australian governments pay a high economic price for singling them out."
Perth International Telecommunications Centre - Landsdale
Telstra's Perth International Telecommunications Centre, in the suburb of Landsdale, is the site of satellite downlink and tracking facilities for both the European European Space Tracking (ESTRACK) system, and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). One of the satellite two dishes operated by JAXA provides a downlink for Japan's suite of military surveillance satellites, known as Information Gathering Satellites. Data processed by this network is directed to the Cabinet Satellite Intelligence Centre (内閣衛星情報センター) within the Cabinet Intelligence and Research Office (内閣情報調査室).
Regarding May 2009 DPRK nuclear test
Reactions, statements and analysis by GPPAC Northeast Asia members in regards to the DPRK's nuclear test.
A world free of nuclear weapons: the fierce urgency of now
Malcolm Fraser argues that “the most effective, expeditious and practical way to achieve and sustain the abolition of nuclear weapons is to negotiate a comprehensive, irreversible, binding, verifiable treaty - a Nuclear Weapons Convention.” Fraser concludes by arguing that Australia must reconsider the role of nuclear weapons in its security policy: “erstwhile reliance on ‘extended nuclear deterrence’ by countries without their own nuclear weapons, like NATO members, Australia and Japan – must not be allowed to persist and become an obstacle to nuclear disarmament.”
Defending Australia in the Asia Pacific Century: Force 2030 – friend in need or neighbourhood bully?
Vijay Naidu argues that Australia’s security "lies in assisting development efforts through an approach characterized by enlightened self interest rather than imposing 'Pacific solutions' backed by the threat of using the Australian Defence Force (ADF) on missions to stabilize fragile states."
Japan’s Nuclear Policy: Between Non-Nuclear Identity and US Extended Deterrence
Satake Tomohiko writes that “managing regional threats and uncertainty is important not only for enhancing Japanese security, but also for reducing its dependence on US nuclear protection. Such a policy will mitigate the problem of the ‘nuclear dilemma’ in Japanese non-nuclear policy over the long term. This will enable the Japanese government to continue to work towards nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament while maintaining its non-nuclear national identity in the years to come.”
The Nottingham Declaration Action Pack
