Order of items

How to control the order of items in folders and in Web logs (blogs).

Keeping a folder in order

Items appear in a folder in the order that they are created, with new items appearing at the bottom of the list.
Sometimes, you might want items to be in a particular order:

  • Alphabetical order.
  • Date order with the newest items on top, where they will be seen first.

Here is how you can keep the items in a folder in the order that you want them to appear:

  1. Log onto the Global Collaborative.
  2. Go to the folder that you want to put into order.
  3. Choose the [Contents] tab.
  4. Click and hold on the 'size' or 'date modified' of the item you want to move.
  5. Drag it up or down to just before the place that you want it to appear.
  6. Use the up and down 'order' arrows to move it the last step, to the place that you want it to appear.
  7. Repeat this process until all the items are in order.

Please note that you have to use the up and down 'order' arrows to move that last step.  This allows the Global Collaborative to recognise that something has actually moved. If you don't do this step, the change won't be permanent.

Also, being able to drag items (as described in step 5) is browser dependant. In some browsers, you may not be able to drag items.  If so, you need to use the small up and down arrows or change to a different browser if you can.
For something that you produce regularly, like AdaptNet (once a week), I move the item each time I create it.  That way, the folder is always in order.

Keeping your blog in order

Web log (blog) items appear in the order that they are created. If the creation date is changed, they might appear in the wrong order.  This can happen if things need to be restored after a crash (for example).

You can use the [Properties] tab to control the publication date and time of your blog entries.  That will make them appear in the correct order.

  1. Log onto the Global Collaborative.
  2. Navigate to the blog where the entries are out of order.
  3. Open each blog entry (click on the heading so that you are only looking at that entry).
  4. Choose the [Properties] tab. You will see a page headed 'Edit Weblog entry'.
  5. Scroll down to the 'Effective date'.
  6. Change the date (or time) to what it should be.  If you are not sure, you can just choose a date (or time) that will result in the correct order.
  7. [Save].

Repeat these steps for all the Web log entries and they should appear in the correct order.

You can also use the 'effective date' to provide an embargo date for items. That is, you can set a date in the future, when you want the item to appear.
