Mt Kumgang meeting: Overcoming Divisions and Building Peace Through Civil Society Initiatives

by Meri Joyce last modified 04-Oct-2007 03:59

Focusing on key regional issues such as the nuclear issue-based Six-Party Talks; the need for improved historical recognition; and revision of Japan's "peace" constitution, the group produced i) a joint statement on how civil society can work to overcome divisions and build peace, as well as ii) a comprehensive 5 year work plan in which a variety of innovative and concrete proposals are put forward to promote regional peace and security, based on the 2005 Northeast Asia Regional Action Agenda

The results of the consultation meeting were presented to the media at a press conference in Seoul on March 6, 2005 and the two key documents also formed the basis for discussion at a Roundtable Meeting between representatives from NGOs, the UN, Foundations and regional governments, held at UNESCO House in Seoul.
