- Timor Leste has always been considered one of the UN’s successes for the temporary governing role it had in the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET)for the transition period to independence and elections from 1999 to 2002. Thereafter UNTAET was succeeded by the United Nations Mission of Support in East Timor (UNMISET) to stabilize the handover process until 2005. Now, some tension has erupted between the UN and Timor Leste over the national peace and reconciliation process.
